Success Story – Deadbeat Dad Owing Child Support in Excess of $85,000 Held Accountable

After Years of Pursuing Child Support From Ex-Husband, Lavelle Law Helps Client Get Results

A wooden block with the word win written on it next to a judge 's gavel.

Background: The client’s ex-husband moved away and, despite having a child support obligation, he refused to pay. The total owed exceeded $85,000, accruing over a period of 8 years. The client attempted to work with governmental agencies on her own to pursue the child support owed to her, to no avail.

Challenges: Lavelle Law took immediate steps to locate the deadbeat dad and upon confirming his location, filed a petition for contempt against him. We also reached out to the Illinois Department of Healthcare & Family Services seeking their assistance to find and garnish bank accounts, tax refunds, and any other means to obtain and/or compel payment of the child support arrearages. We were persistent and unrelenting.

Result: Once deadbeat dad realized he was going to be held responsible for all arrearages, plus interest and penalties, (nearly $100,000), he was ready to negotiate. The client was in need of funds immediately. To be able to secure her a large amount of the outstanding funds sooner rather than later, we agreed to waive interest and penalties in exchange for a large initial lump sum payment but only on the condition that if deadbeat dad fell behind on any future payment, all interest and penalties would become immediately due. The client received 50% of the arrearages within 30 days, and the rest was scheduled to be paid off over time. We were also successful in the Court granting our request to keep the matter on the “active call” for status on “compliance of payment” to ensure that all future payments would be paid in full within the agreed-upon timeline.

"When I was ready to give up on a very long and messy child support case because I had no fight left in me, Annette Corrigan took my case and fought for me. She listened patiently, asked for information gently and answered my questions clearly. I was in a very emotionally and mentally fragile place after years of struggling in and out of court and Annette never made me feel silly for asking the same questions over and over and never lost her patience when I needed things explained repeatedly. I would trust Annette to represent my own children and I recommend her to anyone needing legal help. The legal expertise, kindness and commitment I received from Annette and Lavelle Law is hard to find, so grateful to have had her on my side and help me get what I deserved. "

Type F Reorg offers a means of achieving structural change while preserving tax continuity
By Steven A. Migala and Nathan P. Toy April 14, 2025
A Type F reorganization (“F Reorg”), governed by Section 368(a)(1)(F) of the Internal Revenue Code, provides a strategically significant mechanism for corporate restructuring. Defined as a “mere change in identity, form, or place of organization of one corporation,” an F Reorg permits a corporation to alter its legal existence while being treated for federal tax purposes as the same entity. This recharacterization allows for the uninterrupted preservation of tax attributes while maintaining shareholder continuity.

No. 2023-0449-JTL, addressing a challenge to TripAdvisor's redomestication from a Delaware corporation to a Nevada corporation. Illinois residential zoning laws and significant opportunities for property owners.
By Chance W. Badertscher March 12, 2025
Recent legislative efforts in Illinois are reshaping the state’s approach to residential zoning, with significant implications for the housing market. A new bill, House Bill 1814, introduced last week, aims to eliminate single-family zoning in municipalities across Illinois. If passed, this bill will allow for the development of multi-unit buildings in areas currently zoned exclusively for single-family homes. This initiative, alongside a similar bill introduced last year, has the potential to address the state’s growing housing shortage and make housing more affordable for middle-class families.
